The research methods for Parkinson’s disease, motor coordination disorders and pain are becoming increasingly more extensive. An innovative instrument has been developed to gain new insight into this type of research: the CatWalk.

The soloution

In mid-2005, a progressive market party developed the concept for the CatWalk: a video-based measurement concept for registering and analysing the walking pattern of mice and rats. The market party considered De Koningh Medical Systems to be a suitable partner for turning this concept into a reality.

From idea to final test

The CatWalk concept: a glass plate over which an animal walks with a camera placed underneath it. The camera, with the help of a computer, registers the position of the feet and the pressure they exert on the glass plate. This gives information into the animal’s behaviour with and without medication. This concept is being developed, produced and assembled by De Koningh Medical Systems. At the end of 2005, the first prototype was used to test the safety, practicability and conformity.

New insight

The CatWalk is used to test the effect of medicines on mice and rats. The results give new insight into research concerning motor coordination disorder and pain. De Koningh has developed the CatWalk for use in academic research institutes, universities and pharmaceutical companies. The system is used many in scientific studies.
